Golden Globe Awards Top 10 Million Viewers

The recent Golden Globe Awards ceremony, broadcast by CBS and streamed on Paramount+, attracted an average of 10.1 million viewers. This figure represents a 7.4% increase from the previous year’s show, which was held in January. The latest ceremony, hosted by comedian Jo Koy, demonstrated a significant rise in viewership, up 50% compared to the prior event hosted by NBC. Despite this increase, it has not yet returned to pre-pandemic viewing levels.

The Golden Globes had a tumultuous period following a diversity scandal connected to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which traditionally hosted the awards. After a hiatus in 2022, NBC aired a stripped-down version of the awards in 2023, after which the television rights shifted to CBS, leading to the 2024 ceremony. Dick Clark Productions now operates as a unit of Penske Media Company, which is also the parent company of IndieWire.

Comments about the quality of the show have noted improvements, with IndieWire critic Ben Travers giving this year’s ceremony a “B-” grade, reflecting a better reception than last year’s performance. Following her successful hosting, there are suggestions for Nikki Glazer to return next year.

This year’s event coincided with an NFL matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, which was the top-rated broadcast with an average of 28.5 million viewers.

Among the awards, “Shogun” won for best television series in the drama category, while “Hax” was named the best comedy. The best film in the drama category went to “The Brutalist,” and “Emilia Pérez,” although classified as a musical, received the most awards overall, totaling four. Lastly, “Wicked” won both the inaugural film award and the box office performance award.
