CinemaCon 2025: Tensions and Opportunities in the Theater Industry

The recent CinemaCon in Las Vegas aimed to celebrate the resurgence of the cinematic experience, but it quickly became clear that underlying tensions between studios and exhibitors persist. After enduring a pandemic and labor strikes that have significantly altered the landscape, this year’s gathering revealed the ongoing challenges facing the movie theater business.

Economic Outlook and Box Office Performance

The movie industry had pinned hopes on 2025 as a year of revival, fueled by promises of a plethora of superhero films and star-studded blockbusters. However, the reality has been disappointing, with revenue dropping by 10% compared to 2024, and newcomers like “Snow White” and “Mickey 17” failing to attract audiences.

Disputes over Innovation and Distribution

At the core of the tension are disagreements between studios and theater operators about what is needed to revitalize business. Studio executives argue that exhibitors must modernize their facilities and adopt pricing strategies that appeal to budget-conscious consumers. In contrast, theater owners contend that the timely release of films on streaming services undermines their box office sales and demand a stronger array of theatrical releases.

The Theatrical Window Debate

AMC Theatres’ CEO, Adam Aron, is advocating for a return to a 60-day exclusive theatrical window for new releases. Citing pandemic-era adjustments that shortchanged cinemas, he’s keen to renegotiate prior agreements that allowed films to shift to on-demand platforms within 17 days.

During CinemaCon, participants echoed his sentiments, arguing that the new distribution models often cannibalize revenue from theaters. Michael O’Leary, leader of Cinema United, provided evidence that while blockbusters still perform well, attendance and earnings drop considerably for films not among the top performers. He advocates for a reduction of the release window to 45 days, citing that prior to the pandemic, it was around 90 days.

Rising Competition and Changing Dynamics

Unlike last year, when goodwill was abundant following the labor strikes, exhibitors are now more skeptical of studio intentions. Frustration grows among theater owners as studios position many films—particularly those not tied to major franchises—as solely for streaming. This has created a divisive “us vs. them” mentality, leaving theater operators feeling overlooked.

Amazon MGM’s Strategic Entry

A glimmer of hope for theater owners lies in Amazon MGM, which emerged as a potential lifeline to fill the void left by the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney. Mike Hopkins, the head of Amazon MGM, announced plans to roll out 15 major films annually by 2027, with 14 already scheduled for 2026. This commitment aims to provide a broader selection of genres, from action to family films, essential for theater diversity.

Audience Engagement and Star Power

Despite star-studded presentations featuring celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Scarlett Johansson, the audience response was notably reserved. CinemaCon attendees, consisting mostly of theater staff, appeared less enthralled by celebrity appearances than in previous years, emphasizing a potential shift in engagement dynamics.

Future Projections

As industry stakeholders regroup, the rallying cry has shifted from “Survive till 25” to “Survive till 26,” with many hoping that the return of sequels from major franchises like “Avengers” and “Toy Story” will signal a resurgence in box office attendance. Upcoming releases from acclaimed directors such as Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg also add an optimistic layer to future prospects.

The next couple of years will be pivotal for the film industry as both studios and theater operators navigate these complex dynamics, ensuring that they not only survive but thrive.
