Domestically, “Wicked” has grossed $424 million, overtaking “Grease” to become the top Broadway movie in the United States. This achievement is significant for Universal, especially as the sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” is scheduled to open in 2025.
In other box office news, Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has also made headlines, achieving a record international opening of $74 million. This installment marks the biggest overseas opening for the family series, surpassing the previous film, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” which opened at $33 million internationally in 2022. The latest “Sonic” film has grossed $137 million in North America and $211 million worldwide.
The film “Nosferatu,” directed by Robert Eggers and featuring Bill Skarsgård, has grossed $3 million during its international debut from five markets. In the U.S., it earned $21.1 million in its opening weekend. The movie will continue to be released internationally in 2024.
Disney’s “Mufasa” has emerged as a newcomer at the international box office with $77.1 million from 52 major territories. Although it initially struggled, it has shown signs of improvement with total earnings of $328 million worldwide. Meanwhile, “Moana 2” has generated $36 million overseas over the weekend, bringing its international total to $487.8 million and a worldwide total of $882 million. The animated sequel adds to a successful year for Disney, which has seen several films cross the $1 billion mark.
