Universal Pictures has reported remarkable sales figures for the premium video-on-demand release of Jon M. Chu’s musical film, *Wicked*. Within its first week of home viewing, the film earned over $70 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
On its initial day of release, December 31, the film generated more than $26 million, setting records for both the largest opening day and opening week for a Universal Pictures premium VOD film. This performance surpassed the previous record held by *Super Mario Bros. Movie*, which earned $44 million in its first week.
*Wicked*, featuring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, remains available for purchase or rental. On Amazon Prime, it can be rented for $29.99, while Apple TV offers it at $19.99.
In terms of box office success, *Wicked* has continued to perform well, grossing approximately $681.3 million worldwide since its theatrical release on November 22. This figure exceeds the total earnings of *Mamma Mia!*, which stands at $611.5 million, making *Wicked* the highest-grossing film based on a Broadway musical.
In recognition of its achievements, the film received multiple accolades at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, including Best Picture and Best Box Office. A sequel, titled *Wicked: For Good*, is scheduled for release in theaters on November 21, 2025.
