Josh Welsh, the president of Film Independent, passed away on December 31, 2024, after a prolonged battle with colon cancer. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife and daughter. A heartfelt tribute from his friends on social media reflected on his life and contributions, celebrating Welsh as a generous individual whose spirit would be cherished forever.
Welsh’s leadership at Film Independent spanned over 21 years, having first participated as a young actor volunteering at the Film Independent Spirit Awards in 1996. He became president in 2012 and was instrumental in the organization’s expansion, which included doubling membership numbers, increasing budget and staff, and enhancing programs and partnerships. His tenure saw a strong commitment to diversity within the film industry.
Before becoming president, Welsh focused on artist development programs at Film Independent for more than a decade. He was a familiar face at film schools and film festivals, often serving as a juror. In addition to his work in film, Welsh was the lead singer of the band Meatyard, which was set to release a new album.
Brenda Robinson, Chairman of the Board at Film Independent, expressed deep sorrow over Welsh’s passing, emphasizing his commitment to independent voices in the arts and calling for the organization to honor his legacy. Welsh is survived by his wife, Bonnie Gabel, and daughter, Ira Welsh.
