Simone Biles has indicated that she is unlikely to participate in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated following her recognition as Athlete of the Year, Biles expressed that returning to the Olympics would be “greedy,” given her numerous accomplishments in gymnastics. She noted that at this stage in her career, she feels it is important to recognize when it’s time to step back.
Biles reflected on her journey, mentioning that while the desire to compete can be strong, it is essential to consider the sacrifices involved. She highlighted the differences in priorities between youth, such as high school and college experiences, compared to adult decisions, like starting a family and maintaining relationships.
During her appearance on The Tonight Show, Biles humorously addressed questions about her future in gymnastics, pointing out the challenges of competing at 27, which she described as “a little old for a gymnast.”
Her accolades include being the first American woman to win two gold medals in the individual all-around since 1968 and holding the title of the most decorated American Olympic gymnast with nine medals. Biles is also noted for being the oldest woman to win the individual all-around title since 1952.
Despite her extraordinary achievements, Biles suggested that the full impact of her career on the sport may not be fully recognized until after her retirement, acknowledging that it takes time to appreciate what she has contributed and accomplished in gymnastics.
