Ringo Starr Exudes Cowboy Cool On 'look Up'

Ringo Starr, known as one of the iconic members of The Beatles, has long harbored dreams of being a cowboy. Growing up in Liverpool, he envisioned a life filled with the spirit of the Wild West, particularly in Texas. His affinity for country music made him the most notable country fan among the Beatles, with songs like “Act Naturally,” “What Goes On,” and “Don’t Pass Me By” highlighting this passion. After 50 years, Ringo has released his first country album titled “Look Up,” produced by T Bone Burnett. This album showcases Ringo’s vibrant vocals and enthusiastic drumming.

Following The Beatles’ breakup in 1970, Ringo pursued his country music aspirations in his solo album “Beaucoup of Blues.” He recorded in Nashville with pedal steel virtuoso Pete Drake and local session musicians, transforming a studio into a friendly environment. This album allowed Ringo to explore vulnerability through heartfelt lyrics, establishing him as a significant solo artist.

“Look Up” carries Ringo’s distinct earthy vocals and simplicity. His recent studio work included the creation of multiple EPs during the pandemic. Now, “Look Up” marks his first full-length album in six years, featuring poignant tracks like “Time on My Hands,” which reflects on lost love.

Ringo’s collaboration with T Bone Burnett dates back to the 1970s, but their recent country project began in 2022. Burnett penned nine of the eleven tracks, maintaining a genuine country sound throughout. The album features lively songs such as “Breathless,” featuring Billy Strings, and “Thankful,” a duet with Alison Krauss, which is the only track co-written by Ringo.

Although the album could have easily featured numerous high-profile Nashville duets, it instead embraces a more authentic approach. Burnett’s appreciation for traditional country elements shines through, and “Look Up” encapsulates Ringo’s timeless spirit. At 80 years old, he continues to embody the energy and charm that have made him a beloved figure, complete with a cowboy hat that pays homage to both his aspirations and his storied past.
