The journey of screenwriter and director Mohammad Rasoulof in creating “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” was marked by challenges, yet it has emerged as one of the year’s most celebrated films. The political thriller received the Best International Film Award from the National Board of Review for 2024 and has been submitted by Germany for consideration at the 97th Academy Awards. Its acclaim began with a special award at Cannes, helping to raise awareness of both Rasoulof’s work and the difficulties faced by artists under oppressive regimes.
In a recent discussion, Rasoulof emphasized the significance of the attention surrounding his film, particularly regarding the plight of creators in repressive environments like Iran. He expressed hope that the film could inspire others in similar situations. He noted that as the film gains recognition, it provides greater protection for him and the film crew, allowing them to continue their artistic pursuits amidst harsh restrictions.
Rasoulof, who experienced the severe ramifications of censorship, including an eight-year prison sentence, reflected on his newfound freedom to express himself without fear. He commented that this experience has made it possible for him to focus entirely on filmmaking, a privilege he previously struggled to attain. Furthermore, he highlighted how the context of “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” lent itself to more discreet filming, allowing them to capture stories within Tehran without drawing unwanted attention.
The film is currently on the Oscar shortlist, with nominations set to be announced soon. “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” is now available for viewing on Neon.
