Universal Pictures to Bring Sega’s Iconic OutRun to the Big Screen
Project Overview
Universal Pictures has announced it will adapt the beloved 1986 arcade game “OutRun,” developed by Sega, into a feature film. This project aims to capture the spirit of the original driving adventure that sparked a new genre of arcade gaming.
Creative Team
Michael Bay, known for the “Transformers” series and “Ambulance,” is set to direct the film. Sydney Sweeney, an actress recognized for her roles in “Anyone But You” and “Immaculate,” will take on the producing role. They will collaborate with Brad Fuller through Platinum Dunes, which has a first-look deal with Universal.
Toru Nakahara, who has produced for the “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise, will represent Sega in the production, with oversight from Shuji Utsumi, the president and COO of Sega Corporation.
Production and Writing
Screenplay duties will be handled by Jayson Rothwell, known for works like “Polar” and “Arachnid.” While details regarding the film’s plot remain undisclosed, anticipation is building as Universal continues its string of successful video game adaptations.
Sega’s Legacy and Universal’s Success
The “OutRun” series originated in the 1980s and is celebrated for its innovative approach to driving games, influencing many subsequent titles and even generating a unique electronic music subgenre. Its enduring popularity has made it one of Sega’s flagship franchises.
This film aligns with Universal’s recent success in the gaming adaptation arena, following hits like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed over $1.4 billion globally, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which earned approximately $290 million.
Representation and Oversight
Matt Reilly, Executive Vice President of Production Development, along with Senior Vice President Ryan Jones, will oversee the project for Universal Pictures, ensuring alignment with studio standards.
Bay is represented by Rich Cook at Range Media Partners, while Sweeney is supported by Paradigm and imPRint, among others. Rothwell is represented by Cliff Roberts at Syndicate Entertainment.
