’20 Pounds to Happiness’: A Companion to ‘Real Women Have Curves’
After over two decades since the original film, “Real Women Have Curves,” a fresh narrative titled “20 Pounds to Happiness” is set to make its debut. This new project, described as a “companion piece,” is penned by the original creator, Josefina López, who also wrote both the film and its Broadway adaptation.

This story continues the exploration of themes surrounding body positivity and women’s issues that resonated in López’s earlier work.

Reflecting on “Real Women Have Curves”
The original story of “Real Women Have Curves” has its roots as a play written between 1988 and 1990, later adapted for film in 2002. This narrative remains relevant today, according to López, who stated, “I truly believe the best way to fight hatred and prejudice is to first love yourself for who you are.”
López emphasizes the importance of celebrating the unique experiences of Latina women and the broader immigrant community, highlighting ongoing societal challenges. Her work encapsulates the strength and solidarity women can foster, often derived from personal experiences and cultural backgrounds.
Upcoming Projects
In addition to “20 Pounds to Happiness,” López is currently developing a new musical with composer Jaime Lozano, as well as working on an autobiography titled “Real Women Have Courage.” These endeavors continue her mission of amplifying women’s voices in the arts.
U.S. Premiere
Following its Cannes debut, “20 Pounds to Happiness” will have its U.S. premiere at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival on May 31.
