Von Erich Family Addresses Portrayal in ‘The Iron Claw’
Family Concerns Over Film Accuracy
The Von Erich family has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with A24’s depiction of their father, Kerry Von Erich, in the film The Iron Claw. In a preview for the upcoming episode of the docuseries Hollywood Demons airing on Investigation Discovery, family member Lacey Von Erich highlighted significant omissions in the film.
Key Omissions in the Film
Lacey remarked, “My sister and I were not in the movie as my dad’s children and he didn’t have a wife or anything. And that was a really big part of my dad. So how he was portrayed in the movie is so inaccurate that it was heart-wrenching.”
The film depicts poignant aspects of Kerry Von Erich’s life, including his motorcycle accident that resulted in an amputation, his struggle with painkiller addiction, and his tragic death by suicide. However, it overlooks the presence of his wife, Catherine Murray, and their two daughters, which are vital elements of his personal story.
Insights from Kevin Von Erich
Kevin Von Erich, the surviving brother of Kerry and portrayed by Zac Efron in the film, supported Lacey’s criticisms. He emphasized that Kerry was deeply family-oriented, contrary to what was shown. He stated, “Kerry in the movie was not a family man, but in real life he was.”
Despite endorsing the film, Kevin confirmed that the family was not consulted during its production. This oversight has raised concerns about the authenticity and representation of the Von Erich legacy.
