‘To Live in a Shout’: New Film in Development

Overview of the Project

The anticipated feature film “To Live in a Shout” is currently in development under the direction of renowned writer and editor Diana Toucedo. The project has garnered notable attention with the recent addition of Estibaliz Urresola, known for her work on 20,000 Species of Bees, as a co-writer.

Film Participation and Content

This film is set to be featured prominently in the upcoming Malaga Festival’s MAFIZ, which includes MAFF, the festival’s platform for co-production and financing opportunities. Described by producers as a gripping drama, “To Live in a Shout” follows the journey of Lola, a U.N. human rights activist. Lola’s life spirals out of control when her close friend Fariya goes missing during an attempt to reach Europe. Driven by an obsessive quest for the truth, Lola puts her career, relationships, and safety on the line as she confronts the harsh realities of the migration system she once trusted.

Director and Co-Writer Backgrounds

Diana Toucedo brings a wealth of experience to this project, having edited over 30 feature films, including critically acclaimed titles like Tobacco Barns and the Gaudi Award-nominated Julia Is. Her directorial debut, Thirty Souls, premiered at the Berlinale in 2018, further establishing her as a versatile talent in the industry.

Partnering with Toucedo, Estibaliz Urresola is recognized for her acclaimed debut feature, which won a Berlin Silver Bear in 2023. Urresola initially gained attention with her award-winning short film “Cuerdas,” which showcased her ability to highlight global themes through local narratives, marking her as a significant new voice in Spanish cinema.

Production Team and Outlook

Leading the production efforts is Alba Sotorra, a prominent Catalan producer representing Miramemira and Homemade Films. Filming is anticipated to commence in 2026. Sotorra is noted for her role in producing influential works such as The Return: Life After Isis and Upon Entry, the latter earning a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award.

Additionally, Sotorra collaborates with Andrea Vásquez at Miramemira, which focuses on socially relevant cinema, underscoring their commitment to impactful storytelling. Their previous work includes the celebrated San Sebastian Golden Shell winner, The Rye Horn.

Future Expectations

The collaboration between Toucedo and Urresola positions “To Live in a Shout” as one of the most compelling Spanish projects on the horizon. The synergy of their talents, backed by Sotorra’s expertise, promises a film that not only engages audiences but also stimulates crucial conversations about human rights and the migration crisis.
