Pete Doherty Discusses Health Transformation and New Lifestyle Choices
New Lifestyle Changes
During a recent appearance on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place Podcast, Pete Doherty provided an update on his health and the significant lifestyle changes he has embraced. The frontman of The Libertines and Babyshambles revealed that he feels “something has sort of shifted” within him as he aims to improve his wellbeing.
Health Struggles
Doherty has faced serious health challenges recently, particularly concerning his diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, which he received last year. Earlier this year, he expressed concerns about potential amputations due to complications with his toes, leading him to begin wearing orthopaedic shoes. In his discussion with Cotton, he mentioned, “They were going to have to come off. They’re kind of on the mend now.”
Alcohol Consumption and Family Life
As part of his commitment to better health, the singer has significantly reduced his alcohol intake. He now allows himself to drink occasionally, noting, “I’m letting myself have a drink once in a while, like, every 10 days.” He spoke about the positive impact this change has had on his family life, humorously stating that his wife, Katia de Vidas, “preferred me not on drugs,” highlighting how personal health transformations can affect relationships.
Creative Journey Amidst Challenges
Doherty has been candid about his history with addiction, pointing out that in the past, his motivation to create music was often fueled by “anxiety and darkness.” He has expressed that his health concerns pushed him to confront his demons directly. In an earlier interview, he described himself as “a very sick man” feeling “death lurking,” underscoring the urgency of his situation.
Recent Projects and Future Plans
Despite his struggles, Doherty remains committed to his music career. His recent documentary, Stranger In My Own Skin, sheds light on his battles with addiction and marks a step towards a “cleaner” lifestyle. The latest album from The Libertines, All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade, reflects this new approach to life and creativity.
Looking ahead, the band is scheduled for several outdoor performances across the UK, with notable venues including London’s Gunnersbury Park and Halifax’s Piece Hall. Doherty is also preparing to release a solo album titled Felt Better Alive on May 16, with accompanying UK and European tour dates, including a slot in this year’s Great Escape Festival in Brighton.
Looking Ahead
In discussing the themes of his upcoming album, Doherty commented on the balance of melancholy and an uplifting spirit in his works, stating: “There can be something uplifting about resignation.” He hinted at a potential reunion of Babyshambles, saying that it is “on the cards” for this year, but specifics remain unconfirmed.
