A local theater director, played accurately by Martin Short, appears to critique Charlie Brown’s Christmas performance on SNL’s Peanuts Christmas Sketch, which aired Saturday night (December 21).
The SNL ensemble is full of spot-on parodies of the Peanuts characters in the sketches (hats off to the wardrobe and props department), jumping around to the classic theme song “Linus and Lucy.”
Drake Tuttle (Short, who hosted Saturday’s holiday episode of SNL) is joined by self-proclaimed “genius” choreographer Lestat (Bowen Yang). With complete transparency, Tuttle reveals that they were in a romantic relationship. (They “used to date,” he says, “and our relationship is very strange.”)
When the Peanuts crew members protest that Charlie Brown is the director, he says, “The principal hired me to direct the pageant.”
“And I’m sorry for his passing,” Tuttle said, pausing for dramatic effect before adding, “To me.”
Tuttle tries to take notes. Lestat tries to incorporate contemporary hip-hop into his work. Nothing goes well until they discover their star, Snoopy (Keenan Thompson).
This sketch comes from the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s 1965 Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, which currently sits at No. 1 on the Billboard Kid Album Chart thanks to its popularity during the Christmas season. I arrived while I was there.
Watch SNL’s Peanuts Christmas below. Those watching with children should be aware that there are innuendos, especially when it comes to the jokes Short and Yang directed at Schroeder. Unlike the actual animated Peanuts special, adult statements can be heard on the SNL special.
