The trailer for “Becoming Led Zeppelin,” an upcoming IMAX documentary, has been released, marking the first authorized portrayal of the band’s history. This film has been in production since its announcement in 2019 and features new interviews with key band members: guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones, and frontman Robert Plant, as well as a rare archival interview with drummer John Bonham, who died in 1980.
The trailer includes reflections from the band on their formation in 1968 and their pivotal North American tour in early 1969. The documentary is set to premiere in over 200 IMAX theaters across the U.S. and Canada on February 7, with special one-night advance screenings on February 5. Tickets will be available starting January 17.
Director Bernard McMahon emphasizes the immersive experience offered by IMAX, stating that it brings an authentic sound and visual quality that makes audiences feel as if they are present with the band. Writer and producer Alison McGourty highlighted the extensive efforts made to gather rare footage, photographs, and audio recordings over five years, ensuring high-quality presentation in IMAX.
The rough cut of the documentary was shown at the Venice Film Festival in September 2021, but it has not been released since. Additionally, news from the Led Zeppelin camp includes Jason Bonham’s performance of “Whole Lotta Love” with Billy Joel during a New Year’s Eve concert and Page’s announcement of a new EDS-1275 double-neck VOS custom guitar in collaboration with Gibson.
