Prince Harry Appeals Court Ruling on Security Detail

On Tuesday, Prince Harry presented his case before the UK Court of Appeals, contesting a ruling that reduced the level of publicly funded security available to him during his visits to the United Kingdom. His legal team contends that this decision has subjected him to unfair treatment.

Key Arguments Presented in Court

Harry’s attorney, Shaheed Fatima, argued that the decision to diminish his security detail ignored a thorough assessment of the threats faced by him and his family. Moreover, she emphasized that the crucial recommendations from the Risk Management Board were not considered during the decision-making process.

The background of this legal action traces back to 2020, following a verdict that granted Harry case-by-case security responses while he is in the country. Fatima emphasized that he has been unfairly omitted from protections allotted to others classified within an “Other VIP Category.” Last year, High Court Judge Peter Lane determined that the decision by Buckingham Palace to reduce Harry’s security status through the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) was not “unlawful, irrational or unjustified.”

Claims of Discrimination and Safety Concerns

During the proceedings, Fatima stated, “The appellant does not accept that bespoke means better.” She argued that this indicates Harry is being subjected to different, unjustified, and inferior treatment compared to others. Additionally, Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, reportedly felt compelled to step back from royal family duties due to perceived inadequate protection from the institution.

Call for Fair Consideration

Fatima clarified that Harry is not requesting the same level of protection as active members of the royal family; instead, he seeks an equal application of RAVEC’s guidelines ensuring he receives adequate consideration similar to others.

In a statement made ahead of the appeal last year, Harry’s spokesperson affirmed, “The Duke is not asking for preferential treatment, but for a fair and lawful application of RAVEC’s own rules.”

Impending Decision

Harry’s concerns extend beyond mere protocol; he has expressed fears relating to potential threats faced by his family during their visits, citing negative public sentiment fueled by media portrayals. The Court of Appeals is expected to render a written decision later this week, following the conclusion of hearings, the latter of which will take place behind closed doors.
