Live-Action Snow White Sees Unimpressive Box Office Launch

Box Office Performance

Disney’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the beloved 1937 animated film, Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, has debuted to lackluster earnings. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film accumulated approximately $43 million from U.S. audiences during its opening weekend.

This opening figure not only signifies a disappointing start for the film but also underperforms compared to other Disney live-action adaptations, such as Tim Burton’s Dumbo, which managed to earn $45 million in its debut in 2019.

Global Overview

Internationally, Snow White fared somewhat better, securing an additional $44.3 million from overseas markets. Overall, the film’s global opening total stands at $87.3 million, indicating an underachievement compared to the projected goal of $100 million.

Audience Reception

The film has received a B+ grade from CinemaScore, setting it apart from many recent Disney live-action remakes, which often receive higher marks. Notably, this production has a substantial budget of $250 million.

For comparison, other live-action interpretations of Disney princess stories, like Beauty and the Beast (2017), opened to an impressive $174.6 million domestically, while Cinderella and Maleficent debuted at $67.9 million and $69 million, respectively.

Controversy Surrounding the Film

The launch of Snow White has not been without its challenges. The film faced backlash revolving around the casting of Rachel Zegler, particularly regarding discussions about race despite her Colombian heritage. Furthermore, Zegler’s vocal support for Palestinian people—alongside Gadot’s Israeli background and her comments about the Gaza conflict—has attracted mixed reactions from audiences.

Creative Team

Directed by Marc Webb, known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man films, Snow White also features music composed by the acclaimed duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, recognized for their contributions to The Greatest Showman and Dear Evan Hansen.

Future Projections

Final box office numbers for the weekend are expected to be released on Monday morning, which could provide further insight into the film’s trajectory.
