Q Lazzarus’ cover of the Talking Heads song “Heaven” has been released in its full version for the first time. Known for her iconic 1988 song “Goodbye Horses,” Lazzarus originally recorded this cover for a scene in the 1993 film Philadelphia, but the complete track was never made available until now. The artist, whose real name was Diane Lackey, made a rare public appearance in the film, showcasing her vocal talent. She passed away in 2022 at the age of 61.

The release of “Heaven” serves as a preview for the upcoming album Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives Of Q Lazzarus. This compilation will feature 21 tracks recorded between 1985 and 1995 and is set to launch on February 21, 2024, coinciding with what would have been Lazarus’ 64th birthday. The album includes various songs from her digital and cassette archives, along with a new version of “Goodbye Horses,” which was one of the few commercially released singles during her lifetime.

The 1979 original version of “Heaven” by Talking Heads appeared on their third album, Fear of Music, and was highlighted in the concert film Stop Making Sense. Additionally, a documentary titled Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives Of Q Lazzarus, which Lazarus was involved in during her later years, is expected to be released in the coming months.

Although Lazzarus faded from the public spotlight in the mid-1990s, she revealed in a Dazed interview in 2019 that she had retired from music and was working as a bus driver on Staten Island. Her legacy continues through the new releases and her enduring influence on contemporary artists.
